Ford Issues Three Recalls of its SUVs and Pickups

Ford Motor Co. announced three safety-related recalls Friday, covering 850,630 vehicles built and sold primarily in the U.S. market, with the two of the recalls affecting vehicles built at its Chicago Assembly Plant.

The 2017 Ford Explorer

2013-17 Ford Explorer 

The lion’s share of today’s recalls, 774,696 vehicles, pertain to the 2013-17 Ford Explorer vehicles (Ford’s recall reference number: 21S32). The recall affects 676,152 vehicles in North America, 59,935 in China, 25,257 in Ford’s International Markets Group, 13,162 in Europe and 190 in South America.

The affected vehicles were built at Ford’s Chicago Assembly Plant between Sept. 4, 2012 and Sept. 30, 2017, and the company’s Elabuga Assembly Plant in Russia from Jan. 28, 2013 through July 28, 2017.

This recall involves cross-axis ball joints, which are used in place of bushings for vehicles with higher load or articulation requirements. The part might seize, causing a fractured rear suspension toe link that significantly diminishes steering control and increases the risk of a crash. If you’ve noticed a clunking noise, experienced unusual handling or observed a misaligned rear wheel, your Explorer could have the problem, especially if you live in an area that experiences cold winter weather, high relative humidity and substantial road salt use.

The repair involves inspecting and then replacing the cross-axis ball joint/knuckle if necessary, and replacing the toe links with a redesigned part.

Ford says that there are six allegations of injury related to this condition in North America. Owners will be notified beginning the week of Aug. 23. Ford is also providing a customer satisfaction program for vehicles not sold or registered in corrosion states, but did not release any details.

2020-21 Ford F-350 Super Duty

Ford is also recalling 34,939 Ford F-350 Super Duty pickup trucks equipped with the 6.7-liter engine and a single rear wheel axle built at its Kentucky Truck Plant between Aug. 6, 2020 and May 15, 2021 (Ford’s recall reference number: 21S31). Of those vehicles, 34,855 vehicles were sold in North America, with the remainder were sold internationally. 

The company says these trucks may have a rear axle housing spring seat interface weld issue that can cause the rear driveline to disconnect. Ford says that affected vehicles transmit a vibration and/or shaking at highway speeds, and/or shuddering when accelerating. If the driveshaft disconnects, there will be a loss of power while driving or a the ability to engage the transmission’s park option unless the parking brake is applied.

Dealers will inspect the rear axle, and if it is deformed, the axle housing will be replaced. If axle is not deformed, dealers will weld repair the spring seats.

Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries resulting from this defect. Owners will be notified beginning the week of Aug. 16. 

2020-21 Lincoln Aviator

Finally, Ford is recalling 40,995 2020-21 Lincoln Aviators equipped with the 3.0-liter gas engine. Of those affected vehicles, 36,258 vehicles were sold in North America, 2,601 in Ford’s International Markets Group, and 2,136 in China, and built at Chicago Assembly Plant between June 19, 2019 and Jan. 5, 2021.

In this case, the Aviator’s battery cable wire harness may not be properly secured, allowing contact with air-conditioner compressor pulley. Over time, the pulley may rub through the wire harness insulation and contact the unfused battery positive circuit, resulting in a short circuit and potential fire.

To fix the problem, Ford will add tie straps to the affected area and replace any damaged parts including the battery cable harness, and the air-conditioner compressor belt.

Ford is not aware of any accidents, injuries or fires related to this recall (Ford’s recall reference number: 21S34).

Owners will be notified beginning the week of July 30.

Defining what makes a large luxury SUV “good” can be harder than it looks.

Sure, some things are obvious – are the materials nice enough to justify the price? Is the ride comfortable? Are the seats nice and relaxing? Is NVH kept to a minimum? Is the features list long, with many items that are optional on cheaper vehicles standard?

But some things aren’t so obvious, and/or hinge on subjectivity. Styling, of course, is subjective. But there’s also an “it” factor at play. Basically, buyers want to know that when they pull up to dinner, the valet will compliment their ride. Or, at the very least, that Muffy and Buffy won’t whisper about the driver’s questionable taste after a round of tennis at the club.

There was a time, not so long ago, when driving a Lincoln SUV might get you a bit of side-eye. “Couldn’t afford a Lexus or a BMW, even on her salary?” “You’d think a guy like him would drive an Escalade”.

Lincoln seems to have solved that problem with the Aviator. Turns out that the product is the point, and ads starring Matthew McConaughey – ads that were produced as if the writers sat down with the Lincoln Lawyer himself and sampled some peyote – aren’t. Best to let them be mocked by Saturday Night Live.

It starts with the styling, here. Lincoln has penned a classic luxury look, with clean lines and a big grille that announces your presence. A roofline that slopes towards the rear along with a rakish roofline and a curved front help give what’s essentially a rolling brick a hint of sportiness.

The interior styling is a bit more mixed. Lincoln tries to continue the clean-sheet theme with a cockpit that’s a bit minimalist, and it might work if not marred by the use of the trendy-but-ugly tacked-on infotainment screen. Materials at least feel class-appropriate, if not best-in-class. And exterior noise is mostly well filtered out.

Luxury isn’t limited to look and feel, especially these days. There was once a time luxury buyers, especially those shopping for SUVs, would tolerate soft rides and sloppy steering. But thanks to underpaid and overfed scribes like me shouting into the void about poor performance, a basic standard of competence, if not fun, is to be expected.

Lincoln meets this standard with the Avi. It manages to handle relatively well for its size while sacrificing little in the way of ride. It’s not perfect – some wallow appears on occasion, as does the occasional ripple after encountering a particularly rough bump – but it’s good enough to satisfy most buyers at this price point.

Underhood sits a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that makes 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough to keep up with traffic, though anyone entertaining any fantasies of surprising sport-sedan drivers in stop-light drags need to be disabused of that notion. The Aviator feels every bit of its nearly 5K-pound curb weight.

The standard features list shows the usual suspects in terms of expected items – hands-free power liftgate, dual exhaust with quad tips, LED headlamps, LED fog lamps, ambient interior lighting, heated front seats with driver memory, power tilt/telescope steering wheel, four-zone climate control, 360-degree camera, keyless entry and starting, lane-keeping system, wi-fi, rain-sensing wipers, Revel audio, automatic high beams, Sync 3 infotainment, and blind-spot detection.

The options list is where it gets wild. Spend 11 large and get the Elements Package (heated and cooled front seats, heated steering wheel, heated and cooled second-row seats) plus Lincoln Co-Pilot 360 (park-assist, adaptive cruise control, evasive steering assist, and other driver-aid tech) and add a panoramic sunroof, 22-inch wheels, a towing package, and the Luxury Package (rear sunshades, upgraded seats and audio).

Another 3 grand adds a Dynamic Handling Package with the adaptive air suspension that gives our rig its smooth ride and is height-adjustable. Finally, 2K more adds the Convenience Package: Head-up display, wireless phone charger, and the use of your phone as a vehicle key.

That puts you at $75K. Oh, and save some dough for fuel – the EPA numbers are 17/24/20.

2020 Lincoln Aviator

So, it’s not cheap. But it’s pretty dang good. Good enough to challenge the Escalade, and the aging Lexus GX/LX (although the LX, being based on Toyota’s Land Cruiser, can do some off-roading that the Lincoln likely can’t).

Lincoln has been slowly crawling out of a bad spot, and it’s on the right track. Consistent production of strong vehicles like the Aviator is what’s needed to keep Lincoln in the luxury conversation.

Somewhere, McConaughey approves.

Automakers Suspend Operations, Change Equipment Due to Chip Shortage

Ford is temporarily suspending production at its Kansas City assembly plant to deal with the shortage.

Automakers continue to search for ways to deal with the semiconductor chip shortage impacting the industry on a global scale.

Most companies cut back production and shift available chip inventory to high-profit vehicles like pickup trucks. Seemingly no automaker is immune to the problem, including pricey luxury and sports car makers. Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and others all recently announced moves to deal with the shortage.

This week is not different with Daimler, Stellantis and Subaru reporting today they are taking new measures to account for current run of chip shortages, both in the U.S. and in other facilities around the world.

New announcements

Ford plans to extend the shutdowns at plants that build its F-150, Ford Transit, Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator, Ford Edge/Lincoln Nautilus and Ford Mustang. The Kansas City Assembly Plant that builds its top-selling F-150 and Transit commercial van suspend operations for the weeks of May 3 and 10. It’s currently closed down.

GM is slowing production of its van at its Wentzville plant to deal with the chip shortage.

The Flat Rock, Michigan plant, which builds the Mustang, and Chicago plant that builds the Explorer and Aviator will also be down the first two weeks of next month. They’ve been down since the week of April 12, according to Automotive News.

The company plans to continue the reduced production of its Super Duty and medium-duty trucks at the Ohio Assembly Plant near Cleveland.

General Motors plans to move its Wentzville (Missouri) Assembly plant from three shifts to just two on a temporary basis starting the week of April 26. It’s cutting van production at the site. Production of its midsize pickups, the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon, are unaffected. The company just restarted operations at the facility last week after a two-week shutdown.

Other moves

In what may be the most novel approach to dealing with the issue thus far, Stellantis is using analog speedometers in some its Peugeot models instead of the digital ones they would normally come equipped with.

Daimler is cutting hours for 18,500 workers at two plants in Germany as it waits for more chips.

The move affects only the Peugeot 308, Reuters reported, which are built in France. The brand sold about 98,000 of the 308 model last year. The 308 is being phased out this fall in favor of a new vehicle. The company may reduce the price as a result of the less advanced speedo.

Daimler plans to reduce hours for 18,500 employees and idle production at its Bremen and Rastatt plants in Germany. Bremen builds the C-Class as well as the GLC, GLC Coupe and the all-electric EQC. The Rastatt plant produces the A-Class hybrid as well as the A-Class sedan, B-Class and GLA compact SUV.

Japanese automaker Subaru Corp. revealed plans to temporarily suspend production at its plant in Lafayette, Indiana. The closure will be in place until the end of April, according to officials. It will affect about 15,000 vehicles for North America, officials noted. The company builds the Ascent, Outback, Legacy and Impreza at the site.
