One of the main highlights of the new 2022 Ford Ranger is the introduction of a 3.0-liter V6 turbo diesel engine. Unfortunately, Ford did not give any horsepower figures for this engine, or for any engine to be offered for that matter. The only detail that the company shared is that it “feels really tough in the sense that it’s got endless power and torque, which is exactly what our customers wanted”.

Considering that diesel engines are not that popular here in North America, the chances of Ford offering this engine on our market are slim. Nevertheless, it wouldn’t hurt for us to imagine what a torquey diesel-fed V-6 Ranger would feel like.

As for the other diesel engines, this will be a 2.0-liter diesel in single- and twin-turbo configurations. In the outgoing Ranger, the single-turbo motor produced 180 horsepower and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm) of torque, while the twin-turbo diesel produced 210 horsepower and 370 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque.

Ford will also continue to offer the 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbo gasoline engine, though just like the other engines, Ford did not provide any power figures. For the outgoing model, it produced 269 horsepower and 310 lb-ft (410 Nm) of torque.

Transmission options for the new 2022 Ford Ranger include a 10-speed automatic, 6-speed automatic, and a 6-speed manual.

Upgraded T6 Platform, Increased Capability

The new 2022 Ford Ranger rides on an upgraded T6 platform that offers increased capability and better comfort, and it can also support electrification in the future

Ford confirmed that the Ranger rides on an upgraded T6 platform that features a 50 mm (1.97 in) longer wheelbase and a 50 mm (1.97 in) wider track compared to the outgoing model. The company also says it has a hydro-formed front-end structure that’s designed to accommodate the bigger V6 engine while also allowing a high degree of electrification. Additionally, this structure enables more airflow to the radiator, which helps keep operating temperatures low when towing or carrying heavy loads.

Ford also improved the Ranger’s ride and handling through its 1.97-inch longer wheelbase and 1.97-inch wider body, revised suspension, among other structural improvements

Ford also made improvements to its ride and handling capabilities. By moving the front wheels forward by 50 mm (1.97 in), its approach angle and wheel articulation has been improved. The rear leaf spring suspension dampers have also been moved outboard of the frame rails as a way to improve its ride both on- and off-road. Off-road recovery is also made easier with the prominent dual recovery hooks in the front bumper.

From the outside, the new 2022 Ranger looks like the lovechild of the Maverick and the F-150, with its C-shaped lights, horizontal grille, sculpted hood, and imposing front end.

From the outside, the new 2022 Ranger looks like the lovechild of the Maverick and the F-150. It’s not a bad thing, mind you, because the pickup looks properly modern and sleek. Shown here is the global model, though whichever region the Ranger will be sold, all models now have a more imposing front end that’s characterized by a horizontal grille that’s flanked by C-shaped headlights. Higher variants even come with LED daytime running lights and headlights with Matrix LED technology.

The side profile is more on the evolutionary side of things, while the rear end gets a more sculpted tailgate, new taillight designs, and an integrated step on the sides of the rear bumper

Covering its engine bay is a more prominent hood, while the side profile is more on the evolutionary side of things. Moving towards the rear, there’s a new set of taillights, with higher variants featuring LED lighting. The tailgate is also more sculpted than before, and for the first time, the global Ford Ranger has an integrated step board at the sides of the rear bumper.

Ford calls this pickup the “smartest, most versatile and most capable Ranger ever”. The “smartest” part is evident in the interior, where it debuts a number of firsts for the Ranger nameplate.

Whereas the Ranger pretty much arrived in the North American market with an outdated interior, that isn’t anymore the case with this new model. Most variants come with the latest SYNC4 infotainment that first debuted in the Mustang Mach-E. In the case of the new Ranger, this is controlled via a 10.1- or 12-inch portrait touch screen. Despite having a larger screen, Ford still kept its hard buttons, which is what you would prefer to interact with especially when going through rough roads.

Working in conjunction with the SYNC4 infotainment system is a fully-digital instrument cluster, though Ford has not given any details on how big the screen is. There’s also a built-in modem for the FordPass telematics system that lets owners control vehicle functions and access Ford’s concierge service via their smartphones. Other interior features that the Ranger has are a wireless charging pad and more clever storage solutions, though Ford did not release full details yet on how these work.

Other new features for the 2022 Ford Ranger include a small electronic gear shifter and an electronic parking brake

Apart from these tech features, the new 2022 Ford Ranger’s overall interior design looks far more interesting and appealing compared to the outgoing model. One of its highlights is its small electronic gear shifter and electronic parking brake, for better or worse. There are also various interior color and trim choices available depending on the variant.

Thanks to the 1.97-inch increase in width, Ford is proud to highlight that despite being an incremental increase, this provides a noticeable improvement in cargo volume. Ford, however, did not say how much has the bed size increased over the outgoing model, but they say it’s enough to add another “sheet of building plywood or a full-size pallet”.

Speaking of the bed, the new Ranger offers a cargo management system that consists of dividers that can hold various items. Owners can create different compartments using a system of ultra-strong spring-loaded cleats that clip into rails bolted to each side of the cargo box. The tailgate can also double as a mobile workbench with an integrated ruler and clamp pockets, just like in the F-150.

Lastly, the 2022 Ford Ranger comes with Zone Lighting, which provides exterior lighting on all four corners of the Ranger that can be controlled via the FordPass app or the SYNC4 infotainment

Lastly, the Ford Ranger is also available with a feature called Zone Lighting, which first made its debut in the F-150. This set of lights that surround the vehicle can be controlled via the FordPass app or the SYNC4 infotainment system, and this can be useful in your next camping adventure or your construction work.

Production of the 2022 Ford Ranger will begin in 2022 in Thailand and South Africa. Ford has not yet revealed when it will arrive in the North American market, but we expect it to arrive for the 2023 model year and look slightly different from the global version. The next-generation Volkswagen Amarok will also be based on the new Ford Ranger, which means its unveiling should also happen quite soon.

The Acura NSX will be powered by the same 3.5-liter, twin-turbo V-6 engine paired with three electric motors. The turbos are borrowed from the NSX GT3 Evo race car with a six-percent increase in the boost pressure. In the standard NSX, the combined power outputs are rated at 573 horses and 476 pound-feet of torque. Here, however, the setup receives a power bump.

The V-6 engine makes 520 ponies between 6,500- and 6,850 rpm and 443 pound-feet of torque between 2,300- and 6,000 rpm. The front twin-motor setup makes 72 horses and 108 pound-feet of twist, whereas the rear setup puts out 47 horses and 109 pound-feet of torque.

Combined, the Acura NSX Type S will make 600 ponies and 492 pound-feet of twist, which is an increase of 27 horses and 16 pound-feet of oomph over the standard NSX. This makes it the most powerful road-going Acura ever!

The NSX Type S comes with a Sport Hybrid all-wheel-drive system and a nine-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The gearbox receives enhancements, too. There’s a new Rapid Downshift Mode that will help the car drop gears without any hesitation. Also, the upshifts will be 50-percent faster, apparently.

The electric motors draw power from a 1.3 kWh battery pack.

Acura didn’t get into the specifics, but noted that the NSX Type S can sprint to 60 mph from rest in under three seconds and will have a top speed of 191 mph, which is the same as the standard NSX.

On the outside, the NSX Type S comes with aero upgrades over the standard NSX. This includes a larger grille up front to let the engine breathe better, a carbon fiber, NSX GT3-inspired rear diffuser, carbon fiber roof, etc. Even the rear spoiler, side sills, and front splitter are composed of carbon fiber.

The NSX Type S rides on new five-spoke performance forged wheels that measure 19 inches up front and 20 inches at the rear. You can have them in Matte Shark Grey or Berlina Black finish. They come wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero tires on all four corners. They measure 245/35 section at the front and 305/30 section at the rear. These tires are specially developed for Acura.

Report: Ford Will Make a “Splash”

Ford

Our corporate siblings have stumbled across a patent application filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office that seems to suggest Ford will be bringing back the “Splash” name.

It could be set for use with either the Ranger and/or the all-new Maverick.

The application says it’s for: “Motor vehicles, namely, automobiles, pick-up trucks, electric vehicles, sport utility vehicles, off-road vehicles, and their structural parts; vehicle equipment package consisting of wheels, exterior body parts and seats”.

That latter part suggests to us that the Splash will be a street-performance truck like it was as part of the Ranger line back in the ’90s. It could also be electrified in some way. Then again, the application also lists off-road and SUV use.

Maybe Splash will become a package or trim offered across the Ford lineup, perhaps as a street-performer (maybe hybrid or EV) in some cases and more off-road oriented in others?

We shall see. But with the return of Maverick and now the report of the use of the name Splash, everything old is really starting to feel new. Trends really are cyclical, eh?

2021 Acura TLX Type S Pricing Revealed

2021 Acura TLX Type S

Ford’s Lightning has stolen the spotlight this week, but another hotly anticipated vehicle is jumping around and waving its arms (metaphorically speaking, as cars don’t have arms) to remind buyers it exists and goes on sale soon. That vehicle is the 2021 Acura TLX Type S.

Pricing will start at $52,300, not including the $1,025 destination charge, when the sport sedan goes on sale on June 23. $800 more gets you a high-performance wheel and tire package.

2021 Acura TLX Type S

Only 2,000 of the cars, which have a 355-horsepower turbo V6, sport suspension with a double-wishbone front setup, Brembo brakes, 20-inch wheels, 10-speed automatic transmission, and Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system, will be sold.

2021 Acura TLX Type S

A build-and-price site is up for consumers, and interested buyers can plunk down a reservation.

It’s no electric truck, but it’s exciting in its own way, especially for those of us who still hold a flame for luxury sport-sedans in what’s become a crossover world.

2021 Acura TLX Type S

It’s also about the same base price as a Lightning XLT. And on sale a year sooner. What’s the better deal, huh?

2020 Lincoln Aviator Reserve AWD Review – Getting It Right

2020 Lincoln Aviator

2020 Lincoln Aviator Fast Facts

3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 (400 horsepower; 415 lb-ft)

Ten-speed automatic; all-wheel drive

17 city / 24 highway / 20 combined (EPA Rating, MPG)

13.7 city, 9.7 highway, 11.9 combined. (NRCan Rating, L/100km)

Base Price: $58,700 (U.S) / $62,000 (Canada)

As Tested: $76,620 (U.S.) / $78,985 (Canada)

Prices include $1,095 destination charge in the United States and $2,250 for freight, PDI, and A/C tax in Canada and, because of cross-border equipment differences, can’t be directly compared.

Defining what makes a large luxury SUV “good” can be harder than it looks.

Sure, some things are obvious – are the materials nice enough to justify the price? Is the ride comfortable? Are the seats nice and relaxing? Is NVH kept to a minimum? Is the features list long, with many items that are optional on cheaper vehicles standard?

But some things aren’t so obvious, and/or hinge on subjectivity. Styling, of course, is subjective. But there’s also an “it” factor at play. Basically, buyers want to know that when they pull up to dinner, the valet will compliment their ride. Or, at the very least, that Muffy and Buffy won’t whisper about the driver’s questionable taste after a round of tennis at the club.

There was a time, not so long ago, when driving a Lincoln SUV might get you a bit of side-eye. “Couldn’t afford a Lexus or a BMW, even on her salary?” “You’d think a guy like him would drive an Escalade”.

2020 Lincoln Aviator

Lincoln seems to have solved that problem with the Aviator. Turns out that the product is the point, and ads starring Matthew McConaughey – ads that were produced as if the writers sat down with the Lincoln Lawyer himself and sampled some peyote – aren’t. Best to let them be mocked by Saturday Night Live.

It starts with the styling, here. Lincoln has penned a classic luxury look, with clean lines and a big grille that announces your presence. A roofline that slopes towards the rear along with a rakish roofline and a curved front help give what’s essentially a rolling brick a hint of sportiness.

The interior styling is a bit more mixed. Lincoln tries to continue the clean-sheet theme with a cockpit that’s a bit minimalist, and it might work if not marred by the use of the trendy-but-ugly tacked-on infotainment screen. Materials at least feel class-appropriate, if not best-in-class. And exterior noise is mostly well filtered out.

2020 Lincoln Aviator

Luxury isn’t limited to look and feel, especially these days. There was once a time luxury buyers, especially those shopping for SUVs, would tolerate soft rides and sloppy steering. But thanks to underpaid and overfed scribes like me shouting into the void about poor performance, a basic standard of competence, if not fun, is to be expected.

Lincoln meets this standard with the Avi. It manages to handle relatively well for its size while sacrificing little in the way of ride. It’s not perfect – some wallow appears on occasion, as does the occasional ripple after encountering a particularly rough bump – but it’s good enough to satisfy most buyers at this price point.

Underhood sits a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that makes 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough to keep up with traffic, though anyone entertaining any fantasies of surprising sport-sedan drivers in stop-light drags need to be disabused of that notion. The Aviator feels every bit of its nearly 5K-pound curb weight.

2020 Lincoln Aviator

The standard features list shows the usual suspects in terms of expected items – hands-free power liftgate, dual exhaust with quad tips, LED headlamps, LED fog lamps, ambient interior lighting, heated front seats with driver memory, power tilt/telescope steering wheel, four-zone climate control, 360-degree camera, keyless entry and starting, lane-keeping system, wi-fi, rain-sensing wipers, Revel audio, automatic high beams, Sync 3 infotainment, and blind-spot detection.

The options list is where it gets wild. Spend 11 large and get the Elements Package (heated and cooled front seats, heated steering wheel, heated and cooled second-row seats) plus Lincoln Co-Pilot 360 (park-assist, adaptive cruise control, evasive steering assist, and other driver-aid tech) and add a panoramic sunroof, 22-inch wheels, a towing package, and the Luxury Package (rear sunshades, upgraded seats and audio).

2020 Lincoln Aviator

Another 3 grand adds a Dynamic Handling Package with the adaptive air suspension that gives our rig its smooth ride and is height-adjustable. Finally, 2K more adds the Convenience Package: Head-up display, wireless phone charger, and the use of your phone as a vehicle key.

That puts you at $75K. Oh, and save some dough for fuel – the EPA numbers are 17/24/20.

2020 Lincoln Aviator

So, it’s not cheap. But it’s pretty dang good. Good enough to challenge the Escalade, and the aging Lexus GX/LX (although the LX, being based on Toyota’s Land Cruiser, can do some off-roading that the Lincoln likely can’t).

Lincoln has been slowly crawling out of a bad spot, and it’s on the right track. Consistent production of strong vehicles like the Aviator is what’s needed to keep Lincoln in the luxury conversation.

Somewhere, McConaughey approves.

What’s New for 2020

The 2020 Lincoln Aviator is all new, debuting in both gas and hybrid versions.

Buy/Drive/Burn: The Cheapest Full-size, Truck-based SUVs in America for 2021

We continue the Cheapest Of series today on Buy/Drive/Burn, and check out the least expensive full-size truck-based SUVs on sale in America in 2021. And we’ve been generous today and equipped each of them with four-wheel drive to avoid any usability concerns. Today’s trio is very close in price but diverges elsewhere. Let’s go.

Chevrolet Tahoe

The Tahoe is new for 2021, is the cheapest vehicle here. This year it gains a host of updates including an independent rear suspension and some very in-your-face-styling. General Motors believes more trims are better, and offers Tahoe in LS, LT, RST, Z71, Premier, and High Country variations. At the lower end, an LS starts at $49,600, and a High Country is $68,200 before options. Unlike the others here, the power plant depends on trim and is provided via the stalwart 5.3-liter V8, a 6.2-liter V8 (High Country only), or a 3.0-liter inline-six turbodiesel. The 5.3 and diesel are both available at the LS level, and the V8 is slightly cheaper. A 4×4 LS is available in eight different free colors, most of which are grey-ish. Seats are covered in cloth here, but buyers can choose between Jet Black and “Very Dark Atmosphere,” or as you’d call it light gray. A bench seat can replace the front console, but that’ll cost you $250. With no options selected and after the freight charge of $1,695, the Tahoe asks $54,295.

Ford Expedition

Ford’s Expedition is F-150 based as you’d expect and has been on sale in its current guise since the 2018 model year. It’s available in five different trims presently: XL STX, XLT, Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum. Prices range from a base of $49,025 to nearly $74,000 for the Platinum. All trims feature the same 3.5-liter turbocharged EcoBoost V6, which produces 375 horsepower. In XL STX trim, all six available paint colors are free of charge, and one of them is brown. All seats are covered in cloth at this level, and the only color on offer is Ebony. The 4×4 upcharge is added to the acquisition fee of $656 and the destination charge of $1,695 for a grand total of $55,385.

Nissan Armada

The most expensive entry of today’s trio is also the only one from Japan. The Nissan Armada in its current guise is sold as the Patrol elsewhere in the world and shares a body with the more expensive QX80 and a platform with the Nissan Titan. Available in four trims, S, SV, SL, and Platinum, the Armada ranges from $48,600 to over $65,000 before options. All trims share the same naturally aspirated 5.6-liter V8 used across Nissan’s truck line that’s good for 400 horsepower. Colors available for free on the SV 4WD trim include black and silver. Interiors are dark gray or tan, and the leather has an -ette at the end of it. The four-wheel drive and shipping fee add up for a base price on the Armada of $57,095.

Three big SUVs, all of them ask for around $55,000 of your dollars. Which one goes home with you?

Chevrolet Electric Silverado A ZERO Production

Silverado

Chevrolet’s Silverado electric pickup will be built at the Factory Zero assembly plant in Detroit-Hamtramck, Michigan, along with GMC’s Hummer EV SUV which will also be produced there, General Motors president Mark Reuss said today.

Silverado

A new-from-the-ground-up EV pickup, and not adapted from the gas-powered Silverado, it will use the Ultium Platform. Ultium is General Motors’ virtual development tools and technology, said to have reduced development nearly 50 percent to 26 months.

Chevrolet estimates the new Silverado EV will have a 400-mile range on a full charge. Like its gas-powered sibling, there will be retail and fleet versions of the EV, both expected to be in demand. “Chevrolet will take everything Chevy’s loyal truck buyers love about Silverado — and more — and put it into an electric pickup that will delight retail and commercial customers alike,” said Reuss.

Factory ZERO, General Motors’ renamed Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant, signifies the company’s zero crashes, zero emissions, and zero congestion outlook for the future. ZERO is the largest renovation and retooling ever for a General Motors manufacturing plant. Its paint and body shop, along with the general assembly area, are getting upgrades including new machinery, conveyors, controls, and tooling. The plant’s footprint is now over 4.5 million square feet.

Silverado

General Motors previously hawked its modular propulsion system and Ultium battery-powered global EV platforms. The company is definitely looking to compete head-to-head for customers wherever they may exist. Ultium is a joint venture with LG in Lordstown, Ohio to produce battery cells for future battery electric vehicles (BEVs). Construction of that facility is underway.

General Motors world domination plan calls for a million EVs by 2025, and North American EV leadership. How will this work out with the power grid, President Biden’s future vision, and infrastructure improvements?

2022 400Z HP Revealed?

400Z

According to Project Cars 3, a video game from Slightly Mad Studios distributed by Bandai Namco, the new Nissan 400Z is shown in their latest downloadable content (DLC) power pack to possess some very serious horsepower.

400Z

In its interpretation of the Power Pack, thenewnissanz.com flaunts the numbers shown in the video, such as 445 horsepower and a weight of 3,251 lbs. When it compared the 400Z to the powertrain in the last Z, the 2020 370Z, the numbers they found were 332 hp with a curb weight of 3,333 lbs. If that wasn’t impressive enough, they then pitted the new Z versus the 2021 Toyota Supra, whose inline-six produces 382 hp while weighing in at 3,400 lbs.

400Z

We’ve previously chronicled what we know so far about the 400Z’s powertrain and its design. With no official word from Nissan, there is more speculation than usual, and thus far no spy photos taken here or in Japan.

400Z

Project Cars 3’s power pack is referenced in a trailer, which can be viewed on Yahoo! Entertainment. In the trailer, there are numerous examples of 400Zs, modified for motorsport competition.

400Z

Not having played Project Cars 3, I had to admit the trailer gave me the urge to go out and buy a Playstation4. I wonder if there’s a Gamestop nearby where I can go and try it out?

Lamborghini’s V-12 Isn’t Going Anywhere Anytime Soon

Technically, the Sián isn’t the first hybrid car to come out of Lamborghini’s workshops. Back in 2014, the Italians revealed a prototype called Asterion at the Geneva Motor Show and it mixed the Huracán’s 5.2-liter V-10 with three electric motors powered by Li-ion batteries.

Fast forward to 2019 and we’re greeting the Lamborghini Sián, an Aventador-based production car (albeit limited to just 63 units) that uses supercapacitor technology. The Sián is at the time of writing Lambo’s fastest and most powerful car as it churns out 819 horsepower and needs less than 2.8 seconds to blast from naught to 62 mph en route to 218 mph.

Lamborghini Sian specifications
Engine 6.5-liter V-12, naturally aspirated
Power 785 hp
Torque undisclosed
Electric motor 34 horsepower
Combined system power 819 hp
0-100 km/h (62 mph) 2.8 s
Top speed 350 km/h (217.5 mph)
Power-to-weight ratio 505 hp/ton

Of course, the Aventador isn’t the youngster it used to be and a replacement is due very soon. Word is that its successor will drop next year as a 2022 model but until that happens, we’ve got news about what will power it.

Car and Driver had a chat with Lamborghini’s Chief Technical Officer Maurizio Reggiani, who made it clear that the brand won’t ditch the V-12 but instead opt to adapt it to the times.

“The V-12 has been part of the story of Lamborghini since the very beginning. It has been present in every year of our history, which is why our strategy and our vision for the future is to continue to have a V-12 coupled with a hybrid motor.”

On top of this, the V-12 will also remain naturally-aspirated because such engines “are how you prove engineering is good.” And of course, a Lamborghini must sound like a Lamborghini, and “when you have a turbo you have a damper on the sound, like a muffler,” Mr. Reggiani explains.

From what the Sián showed us, pairing an ICE with one e-motor isn’t just about sheer power. I mean, of the Sián’s 819 horsepower, just 34 come from the electric motor, and Lamborghini says that’s enough for quicker mid-range acceleration, crisper gear shifts, and more torque off the line. Plus, you can get your Lambo out of the garage and on the driveway in complete silence, without acoustically abusing your neighbors.

Looking at the big picture, the Sián is acting like a bridge between the internal combustion engined Lambos that were and the electrified ones that will be. About the latter we’ll learn more once the Aventador’s successor comes to take the throne.

Hyundai May Have Just Priced the Veloster N Out of Relevance

Is the Hyundai Veloster N a good hot hatch?

Hyundai’s first foray into one of the most competitive segments in the entire auto industry was a resounding success.

The automaker promised an electrifying — not the sort that you think — debut, and the Veloster N lived up to the hype.

Hyundai’s decision to throw gobs of money at the feet of Albert Biermann — he’s the former boss of BMW’s M division — paid off as the Veloster N was deemed a hot hatch that could rumble with the segment’s legacy models. The success of the 2020 Veloster N, however, also raised expectations for an even better follow-up. The 2021 Veloster N has to be better than its predecessor, and from the looks of it, Hyundai’s N division was up for the job.

Some improvements for the 2021 Veloster N involved turning previously optional pieces and features from last year’s model to standard equipment, That might not sound like a big deal for those who could afford those options before, but it’s no less gratifying knowing that a lot of them are now standard in the 2021MY.

Take the Performance Package, for example. This package cost $2,100 last year, and among the items included was a bump in power from the stock 250-horsepower output of the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine to 275 ponies. This year, that same engine produces 275 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. In addition to the bump in output, the 19-inch wheels, larger brakes, and the electronically controlled limited-slip differential are now standard in the 2021 model. The new Veloster N is also equipped with an eight-speed wet dual-clutch transmission, ensuring that customers can choose between the new gearbox and the existing six-speed manual. Sure, the latter is the more natural gearbox for those inclined to enjoy the hatch to its limit, but that there’s a choice now is a step in the right direction.

New sport seats are a welcome addition, and they weigh 4.4 pounds less than the previous seats.

The hot hatch’s eight-inch infotainment display is now standard, too, as is a suite of driver assistance systems that include forward collision-avoidance assist, lane following assist, lane-keeping assist, driver attention warning, blind spot collision-avoidance assist, and rear cross-traffic collision warning.

Taking into account these additions, upgrades, and inclusions, it’s within Hyundai’s right to raise the price of the 2021 Veloster N. That’s not the issue, though. The issue is whether the automaker raised it higher than it probably should have.

How much is the 2021 Hyundai Veloster N?

According to Cars Direct, the 2021 Hyundai Veloster N will start at $33,245, including the $995 destination charge.

Do the math and that figure is $4,670 higher than the $28,575 starting price of the 2020 Hyundai Veloster N.

Mind you, we’re talking about base prices. It’s only going up if you splurge on options, the most important of which is the eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Opt for that setup and an additional $1,500 will be tacked into your receipt, raising the hot hatch’s price to $34,745.

On one hand, there is some justification for the increased starting price of the Veloster N. One is the Performance Package, or what used to be a package in the 2020MY Veloster N. The entire content of that package is standard on the 2021 model. That includes the 275-horsepower output, the set of 19-inch wheels, the bigger brakes, the limited-slip differential, and the assortment of driver assistance safety features. Bolstered seats with illuminated N logos and an eight-inch touchscreen with a navigation system also adds to a compelling list of “new” standard pieces in the Veloster N.

- image 943399

On the other hand, the price bump does move the Hyundai hot hatch up the pricing ladder relative to the competition.

In base form, the 2021 Veloster N is now more expensive than the base Volkswagen Golf GTI S, which starts at $29,690.

The DCT-equipped Veloster N is also more than $4,000 more expensive than a 2021 Volkswagen Golf GTI S with its own DSG transmission. The latter starts at $30,490.

This is the reality that a lot of prospective hot hatch owners have to navigate. Is the upstart Hyundai that exciting to justify a price tag that makes it one of the most expensive hot hatch models in the market? Or is a Volkswagen Golf GTI S more of a bargain now? There’s a scenario where, even with all these additions and added equipment, Hyundai priced the 2021 Veloster N higher than it probably should’ve. Of course, we won’t know if the hot hatch justifies the price hike until we take one out for a spin, but would-be buyers will have to make a difficult decision on which hot hatch suits their money and taste better.

Or they could just splurge and spend north of $40,000 on a 2021 Honda Civic Type R. That’ll answer all these questions.
